Over time, the small College of Bytown (1848 – 1861) and then the College of Ottawa (1861 – 1889) became the University of Ottawa (1889 – 1965) thanks to a Royal charter and then, in 1965, became Saint Paul University (1965 – present day) by virtue of a pontifical charter.
