Development of the Oblate lands at Saint Paul University will not be the only major residential and commercial construction project on Main Street next year.
Two buildings four to six storeys high are planned for the property just north of the university. Domicile Developments Inc. will begin selling condominium residences there this fall or early next year, with construction to follow, said the company’s senior vice-president.
The buildings, stretching back from Main Street along Springhurst Avenue, will hold about 140 new residential units, said David Chick. They will also feature significant new room for shops.
“Our new development will have approximately 13,000 square feet of Main Street ground-floor retail space,” Chick said, “and we will do our very best to bring the right kind of retail: restaurant, café and service-type establishments desired for the ‘new’ Main Street.”
To put the size of the commercial space in perspective: it is expected to be a little more than half the size of the new Loblaw’s store on Isabella Street, which occupies about 20,000 square feet.
The Regional Group, which is developing the Oblate lands adjacent to the Domicile project has indicated the ground floor of condominiums slated for the driveway leading to the Deschatelets building will also include commercial space.
